That evening he made his way up to the cottage. Austin at the bank had called, and all being well, 31 July was the completion date. Having it that close, he felt like now was a good time to get his head around how big the task of renovations would be. He had some capital, not much after buying into the partnership, but he was going to be able to get in help. Maybe even a new kitchen from Richard. Not Ash, though, he’d be gone before Connor was anywhere near ready for an investment as big as a new kitchen.
Connor opened the front door, the scent of disuse hitting him as he stepped inside, along with a head full of memories.
“Hello,” he said softly. He recalled saying the same thing when he was a kid during the precious week in the height of summer when he was a different person. He’d always walk into this place with a smile on his face and anticipation that this was going to be the best week of his life. Seven whole days where he was allowed to play outside, to disappear for the day and find the local kids and play with them. He recalled names but none of them had been the rich kids from the Grange or anyone called Ash or Landon. Nope, the kids he played with were normal, climbing trees and making dens. Maybe some of them still lived in the village.
He’d never thought to look before today, but there was something about the permanence of this, the house, the partnership, that was right. He was putting down roots and maybe some of the kids from the halcyon summers were still here to catch up with. He could have friends from when he was young if he just tried to track them down.
A boy called Jamie, who shared Connor’s fondness for animals. Alice, whose dad was a policeman in Cheltenham. Mark, the boy who lent him the bike he used when he was here. So many memories.
You could be safe here, he thought.
The structure of the place was sound. The stairs creaked but remained solid under his feet. Up until a few years ago, the house was still a rental property so it had been maintained up until then. The walls looked in need of freshening up, windows had mould on them, the only bathroom had a large bath, cracked sink, and a toilet that smelled anything but fresh. Most of this was cosmetic and everything looked in good order until he reached the second bedroom. Bedroom one, the room his parents had shared, was wallpapered with cream paper emblazoned with large mauve and purple flowers. His mum loved this room and he could see her sitting on a chair at the window looking down at the garden.
“Look at the hydrangeas, Con,” she would say. Or any other such flower that bloomed below.
“I can see rabbits,” Connor would say back.
Then she would hug him
